Spencer Lee, the college wrestling sensation with three national titles under his belt, saw his illustrious career at Iowa come to a close on Friday evening. His mother, Cathy, expressed her dissatisfaction with the outcome in a rather unique fashion.
As the ESPN broadcast showed, Cathy couldn't contain her emotions after her son's defeat to Purdue's Matt Ramos in the national semifinals. She yanked a pair of glasses from her face, crumpled them in her hands, and then casually tossed them aside like an old pair of socks.
"Spencer Lee's mom Cathy, a former U.S. Olympic judo team alternate, and her glasses did not survive the match," the ESPN announcer joked.
Both of Lee's parents have a background in judo, as revealed by the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, and their love story began in France during a workout session.
Lee's time at Iowa was marked not only by his three national championships but also by two Big Ten conference titles—winning one each season until his 2021-22 campaign was cut short by surgery.
Cathy, in a display of emotional unity, clutched the arm of a fellow spectator before releasing it and venting her frustration on her unsuspecting eyewear.
In spite of the double-knee surgery that interrupted his 2021-22 season, Lee returned as the top seed in the 125-pound division of the NCAA Championships. He bested opponents from Air Force, Michigan, and Lock Haven but was ultimately outmatched by Ramos.
Lee even managed to secure his third national title while wrestling with a torn ACL. He later admitted to ESPN, "I didn't want to tell anybody because excuses are for wusses," according to Hawk Central.
If Lee had prevailed, he would have made history as the first Hawkeyes wrestler to win four individual national titles, as reported by KCRG.
Following his surprising victory, Ramos shared with the Des Moines Register, "We had a game plan. We train for this every day. Spencer is the guy to beat at 125. I've been working for that. He's been in my head every single day. I've just been striving for it. I'm an All-American now. I'm in the national finals. You have to let it fly."
Ramos advanced to the national championship on Saturday night, squaring off against Princeton's Patrick Glory in the 125-pound weight class.
Ultimately, the national championship match proved to be a thrilling spectacle for wrestling enthusiasts. As both Ramos and Glory showcased their skills and determination in the 125-pound weight class, it was clear that the future of college wrestling is in good hands.
And as for Cathy's glasses, they may have met their unfortunate end, but they'll be remembered as valiant casualties in the great battle of parental love and passion.
