Michelle Yeoh's Oscars Win: A Salute to All Moms Raising the Next Generation of Heroes
Michelle Yeoh's Academy Award acceptance speech has touched audiences worldwide, as she pays tribute to motherhood, superheroes, and breaking barriers. With an inspiring message for women everywhere, Yeoh's speech is a reminder that dreams can come true at any age and that moms are the real superheroes in our lives.
"And ladies, don't let anybody tell you you are ever past your prime. Never give up."
Damn right, Michelle.
Michelle Yeoh's acceptance speech for her Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role touched on motherhood, ageism, and the fact that, yes, YOU are in fact a superhero.
"I have to dedicate this to my mom, all the moms in the world, because they are really the superheroes and without them, none of us would be here tonight."
Michelle goes on to say that she'll be taking her award home to her 84-year-old mother that lives in Malaysia, Michelle's own superhero growing up.
Yeoh is the first Asian woman to win a leading role Academy Award, a feat she credits to her mom, her entire extended family, and the groups she had surrounded herself with.
"I wouldn't be standing here tonight without the Daniels, without A24, without my amazing cast and crew. Without everyone who was involved with 'Everything Everywhere All at Once.'
And also to my extended family in Hong Kong, where I started my career. Thank you for letting me stand on your shoulders, giving me a leg up so that I can be here today. And to my godchildren, to my sisters, all of them. To my brothers, oh God, to my family. Thank you, thank you!"
In "Everything Everywhere," Michelle Yeoh stars as Evelyn Wang, whose journey takes her through multiple dimensions and realities—and allows the audience to see Yeoh play more than 70 versions of herself.
Yeoh's dynamic performance as Wang required both physical and emotional flexibility: she had to play roles that ranged from a put-upon wife and mother to an action hero, then became a glamorous star by the end. This was no small feat and is a testament to Wang's remarkable skills as a performer.
Yeoh concluded her speech, stating, "This is history in the making. Thank you!"
To her and all the mothers like yourself making history each and every day, we'd also like to say thank you. Now, your superhero powers are probably needed somewhere else, so we'll let you go. Good luck, and keep on!
